Press Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat is surprised by the comment by the Head of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Freedom of Speech and Information Yuriy Stets in regard to the letter of the head of the Press Service requesting to survey the situation that occurred on October 2 involving journalists of the “Ukrayinska Pravda (Ukrainian Truth)” web-resource Serhiy Leshchenko and Mustafa Nayyem.
We cannot but agree that securing conditions for free expression of journalists’ stand is important, and the Parliament has secured such conditions. Nevertheless, we cannot recollect any cases when one’s opinion would be contended in such a way in any country with stable democracy, such as the US, UK, and others. We would like to remind that the journalists accredited by the Parliaments of the world adhere to the rules of internal conduct and respect the laws of their countries.
Please, mind that we are not discussing the contents of the poster. However, we would kindly ask to not substitute rights and freedoms with simple disrespect to a body of power, the respective services of which, incidentally, do their best to assist the journalists in their work.
The interpretation of the letter by the Head of the Committee is very much surprising, much less however than publication of internal correspondence in the Internet, which is a violation of professional ethics. We would like to remind that the letter contained a request to survey the abovementioned situation, that is – to provide expert assessment of journalists’ actions, and take a final decision.
We emphasize that the Commandant’s Office of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Security Service acted following the legislation and regulatory documents of the Parliament. We remind thereat that, under the current legislation, the journalists shall abide by the rules of internal working schedule determined by the subject of powers.
To conclude, we address people’s deputies with a request to not use structural subdivisions of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat for political purposes.
